New Print Edition of Drahuws’ Charlie “Bad Man” Sifford
Toronto-born artist Drahuws releases a new edition of the Black art print Charlie “Bad Man” Sifford (aka PGA “Bad Man”) as the first addition to the Historic Heroes Collection. The African American artist is known for animated pop art featuring vibrant colors, hidden messages, and heroic Black figures (accompanied by allegorical characters) inspired by Black culture and history.
The subject of the work, Charlie Sifford, was an African American golfer instrumental in desegregating the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) and removing its offensive “Caucasian Only” membership clause. Sifford went on to compete in over 400 PGA tournaments — including winning the 1975 Seniors’ Championship — and creating opportunity for later African American golfers like Lee Elder, Calvin Peete, and Tiger Woods.
Drahuws’ piece captures a bold and confident Sifford as he faces pushback in his quest for equal opportunity. Present on the canvas with him are Drahuws’ dualistically symbolic characters The Black Kristof’s. These figures, dressed in the 90s hip-hop brand Cross Colours LA — the outfitter’s motto is “Clothing Without Prejudice” and its brand built on supporting unity, equality, and empowerment — represent the psyche that protagonists must depend on when facing adversity.
